Doha Vienna and Salzburg

My Dear Great Ones,
What a week.  Two countries, three cities, its been amazing.  After an "overbooking," delay in HK  cost us several hours we(Celia and I) headed to Doha for a few hours.  Sven took us to the Souq Wakif a must stop in Doha.

Men watching the world cup while sucking on a seesha.
Men sewing clothes late at night.
Street scene.  Lots to buy in the souq.

Sandals for sale.

Tea man.

Vienna is the city of old amazing buildings, harking back to an empire that lasted hundreds of years.

Hofburg Palace.

Outside and Inside of the Stephansdom.

Outside and inside of the Votive Kirche.  Votive Church.

Vienna Opera House.

Typical street scenes in Vienna.

Musik Verein

Vienna has many art galleries.  Here is a small sampling of what you can see:

Gustav Klimt.

Monet

Picasso.

Modern art is also offered.

Durer,

Even the graffiti is artistic and good.

Art is everywhere.

Vienna also has great pastries:

Beer and Schnitzel

Semmels and other baked goodness

The world famous Sacher Torte.

Vienna has an array of amazing statues:

In front of the Austrian capital building.

Part of the Vienna theatre facade.

Maria Theresa.  Empress of Austria a few centuries ago.

Mozart is everywhere.  He is a major industry of Austria, bringing in millions of dollars annually.

I thought I was through with rubber ducks after Taiwan!

Mozart Kuglen.  Yum.  Chocolate covered goodness.

Mozarts are everywhere, selling tickets to a concert, sipping water in a pedestrian mall.

Mozart concert at the Musik Verein.  A must do in Vienna as all the male musicians are dressed like Mozart.

Mozart busker.

Mozart busts and ducks.

Schonbrunn Palace.  Another must see in Vienna.  Former summer palace of the emperor of Austria.

Inside Schonbrunn is as impressive as outside.

The backyard of Schonbrunn.

Schonbrunn,   "Nice Fountain," in front, the Gloriette, Maria Theresa's "gazebo" in the back.

A trip to Vienna is not complete without a visit to a "heuriger," where winegrowers serve freshly made wine along with good food, good music and plenty of gemutlichkeit.  I found a great heuriger in the Grinzing district of Vienna.  Its called Brandl.  Another word for excellent.

The streets of Grinzing.  Totally charming.

Brandl heuriger.
Under the vine branches.

Knodel mit Kalb fleisch.  Dumplings with lamb.  Sehr gut!

The musicians kept us happy and entertained with old German, English, and Italian songs.

Salzburg.  Loads of culture with a big fortress overlooking everything.

Birthplace of Mozart.

Getreide Gasse.

Mozart.  Again.

Loads of tour buses carrying thousands of wide eyed and giddy women and their weary, dragged along, and could not care less, husbands, boyfriends, or hanger ons, to the multitude of sites where the Sound of Music movie was filmed.  Don't get why this 50 year old movie is such a hit, it is so historically inaccurate, and the songs are dumb.  Much too sweet and contrived.  Now if they had site tours for movies like Rocky or Terminator, now we are talking.   I am in for sure then.

Have a great week everyone.  Next up: Pig roast in a German forest,  Berliner sausages, and Hamburgers in Hamburg.  Should be fun.

Love adios and ping on!

Dirk
