Down the Dam Wall or Down a Thousand Steps

Hello My Dear Great Ones,
Hong Kong is one of the greatest hiking destinations in the world.  The British, with a lot of help from the locals, created a web of trails throughout the territory which are truly awesome. Most trails have some elevation gain, which makes them a great workout as well.  A truly exciting hike is the one from my home near the Shing Mun country park to Tai Wai.  Lots of great views, lots of vegetation, it is highlighted with a choice of either going down a dam or steps through a jungle.  Of course going the other way Tai Wai to Shing Mun would be a great challenge as one would have to go up.  Did that once, and my legs burned for a day after.

Shing Mun dam face.  A few steps...

Celia on her way down.  Rather steep to say the least.

Yeah.  Just a few steps.

As an extra bonus at the bottom of the steps is another ladder type thing to get you finally...

...into a gorge, with a view of a highway that tunnels through two small mountains.

Under the highway.

Climbing up out of the gorge, on the way to Tai Wai.  In the background is Shing Mun dam.

Another option to get down to the gorge is walking down these stairs.

Nearby is an old drainage dike losing its way to nature.

So you see there are numerous surprises and interesting things to see while hiking in Hong Kong.

Have a great week.

Love adios and ping on!

Dirk
