Kai Tak Cruise Terminal

Kai Tak Cruise Terminal is a cruise ship terminal that opened at the site of the former Kai Tak AirportThe terminal currently has the capacity to disembark a total of 8,400 (peak design load) or 5400 (base design load) passengers and 1,200 crew and its design also anticipates the demands of a new generation of larger cruise liners currently being designed. The interior, which spans 70 metres (230 ft), can be converted into a venue for performances, events and exhibitions, supported by the terminal’s restaurants and shops. This flexibility ensures that the building will be used all year round and can fully utilize down time. The sustainable design combines a number of energy-saving measures, and will generate power from renewable sources, as well as making use of recycled rain water for cooling.[3] 5

I recently visited the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal because the annual Hong Kong wine festival was close by  and there was free transportation to get out there.  The terminal is Impressive to say the least.  It cost over a billion dollars Canadian to build and covers 143, 600 square meters.  It is long, really long, at least 800 meters long, and giant cruise ships, 350 meters from stern to bow, have plenty of space to berth.

The most impressive thing I found about the terminal was the park on the rooftop, the space age design, and the spectacular views.

These pics were taken from the internet:

The following are my own:
 Super long.
A mega, several stories high cruise ship had taken a berth.
From the roof top park one could see the old airport runway.  There are grand plans to build an opera house, sports stadium, and a park with a river! on the rest of the tarmac.  We will see.  Construction has started, there is plenty of money (so far) so in a few years Hong Kong will  have more interesting things to see and do.

 Roof top park.

 Cool space age design.

The length of the concourse on the second floor is impressive.

Some interesting views:
 The old Kai Tak runway.
The squat red building in the foreground has a hockey rink on the tenth floor.  It is where I used to go play.

 Kowloon.
Victoria harbour with Hong Kong on the left and Kowloon on the right.

Have a great week everyone!

Love adios and ping on!
